My Approach to Counselling

I recognise that each person is unique and that you are the expert in your own life.

I hold to the idea that the person is not the problem: the problem is the problem.   Sometimes by separating the problem from the person we can find new ways to look at it and new ways to move forward.

The approach to counselling which I use is called Narrative Therapy.  There are many different stories which we tell about ourselves, or which others tell about us.  Sometimes these stories focus on problems or areas of difficulty or failure.  If these problem stories are given emphasis, we can sometimes be tricked into believing that this is all there is, but I believe there are always alternative stories to be told.  I see my role as a counsellor as helping you identify the stories that offer you the greatest possibilities.
