Confidentiality in Counselling

Your privacy is very important to me.  Counselling is a confidential process and I will not talk about what happens in our meetings or give anyone access to any notes or other documents which are produced in our sessions.  However, there are some things I want you to know.

Safety: I can’t keep confidentiality if I believe it would mean putting you or someone else at risk of serious injury or death.

Supervision: all counsellors have meetings with supervisors where they discuss cases.  This is to help ensure that we are doing the best job we possibly can.  Supervisors are also bound by confidentiality and will not tell anyone else about what has been discussed.

My learning: Sometimes I may ask if I can tape our sessions so that I can listen to them and look for ways I could do things better. I will always check that it is ok with you before doing this.

I will spend some time discussing confidentiality with you in our first counselling session and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
